From the last house.
Into the world.

Ours was the last house in the village. Beyond it lay fields of crops, with blue sky overhead. In the monsoon, the paddy fields filled to the brim. Climbing perch moved through the water; grasshoppers lived on the tips of the grass. On winter afternoons, the harvested fields slowly turned grey. In the mornings, I walked to school with a bag on my shoulder, past fields of mustard. The scent of coriander drifted on the breeze.

My life began in a village in Cumilla in the 1990s, as quietly as one of those ordinary mornings. I did not know then that the fields, the monsoon, the paddy and the star-filled winter nights were silently shaping me. Watching the small lives around me, I was gathering countless questions within myself. The village gave me simplicity, openness and a certain easy detachment. It gave me time to look at the world in my own way.

The shy boy who buried his face in books never imagined that he would one day walk the streets of Hanoi, Visakhapatnam, Pai or Davao. Even a few years ago, these cities were distant names to me. I had no clear plan to go and see for myself how people began their mornings there, where their markets gathered, or which streets lit up in the evening.

I finished my studies during Covid. By then, Buddhadeb Guha, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay and Sunil Gangopadhyay had claimed much of my imagination. Reading their accounts of forests, mountains, rivers and distant settlements, I sensed lives beyond the one I knew. Paulo Coelho, Kahlil Gibran and Nicolas Bouvier carried those thoughts further. I also immersed myself in the films of Steven Spielberg and Mel Gibson. Through it all, I kept returning to the poetry of Jibanananda Das. Like him, I too felt life to be a fragile, imperilled wonder.

I began working as a portfolio manager at a private company. Spreadsheets, calculations of profit and loss, and daily responsibilities were forming a regular life. Even at work, my mind wandered into the lanes of unfamiliar cities. Where might an unknown road take me? Could I spend a day without knowing in advance how everything would unfold? These thoughts stirred a deep restlessness in me.

But wanting to leave is not enough. Preparing to travel with a green Bangladeshi passport means finding answers to many questions. Where could I go? How would I get there? How much money would I need? Where would I stay? I kept researching, gathering information little by little, balancing the numbers and looking for a way forward.

In 2023, I set off on a month-and-a-half backpacking trip through Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. With a bag on my shoulder, I moved from one city to another. Along the way, I met hundreds of people: people from Asia, Europe, Africa and South America, and travelers from Russia, Japan, China and New Zealand. I had never before had the chance to spend time with people from so many countries together.

We shared dorm rooms in hostels. We shopped and cooked together. Some afternoons, a few of us went into the mountains to watch the sunset. At night, we walked through the crowds on walking streets. Through conversation, I learned where everyone had come from, how long they had been traveling and where they were heading next. Some traveled as I did; others traveled very differently. Listening to them, I began to understand how many ways there were to see the world.

That taste of freedom drew me further into travel. Deciding how to spend my own time, staying a few extra days somewhere I liked, or setting off for the next city with someone I had just met—these brought a joy I had barely known in my earlier life.

Much of my learning began with friends at hostels. They showed me how to plan a trip, search Google for useful information about an unfamiliar city, and find a suitable hostel or a community of travelers. Their company also gave me the courage to speak to local people, learn a few words of a new language, ask for help and overcome my hesitation about starting a conversation.

Gradually, I learned to use different websites, applications and forums. Alongside that, I kept thinking about a question: how could I earn while traveling? If I wanted to stay on the road for a long time, I needed a practical answer.

I began volunteering. Through platforms such as Couchsurfing, I stayed with hosts in their homes. Sharing their homes and taking part in small everyday tasks let me see a place more closely. In Thailand, I bought a tent and began camping in different places with other backpackers. My understanding of accommodation, transport and daily expenses started to change.

In Chiang Mai, I met a young woman from Turkey who taught me to hitchhike. One day, we set off hitchhiking from Thailand toward the Laos border. On the way back, we lost our way in a mountain forest. It took us three or four hours to find our way out.

The uncertainty of those hours is part of my traveling life too. There is joy on the road, but there are also poor decisions, fear and moments when you confront how unprepared you are. I have had to learn when to ask for help, when to stop and where I need to prepare better.

Backpackers from different countries and life in hostels changed me little by little. The shy boy who had grown up in Bangladesh, hesitant to speak to strangers, learned to begin conversations himself. Even when I arrived somewhere new without knowing what to do first, I gradually learned to make my own arrangements. I noticed the changes within me through these small moments.

After returning to Dhaka, I decided to leave my job. But I did not have enough money. Even with the desire to go, I could not leave immediately. I had to work for a while longer, prepare and try to reach a position where I could take responsibility for my decision.

In 2025, I left my job and began my backpacking life. Today, I am a full-time traveler. Alongside traveling, I make videos and write books to earn a living. I also volunteer from time to time. I am still learning how to sustain this life. Being on the road keeps teaching me about my needs, my means and the way I work.

Having explored a hundred cities across Asia, I am now turning toward Africa. One day, I hope to see South America and China. I also dream of a long journey along the Pan-American Highway. A life that began in the last house in the village now holds the names of many faraway places. Yet whenever I stand before an open field, I remember the sky of my childhood.

The boy who walked to school past the mustard fields did not know he would come this far. Even now, much remains unfamiliar whenever I arrive in a new city. I put down my bag, look around and begin, little by little, to get to know it.
